The Peņa Roc Scramble

A little bit more than just a walk, the Peņa Roc Scramble should appeal to the slightly more adventurous. Starting near the end of the remote Val d'Arc valley (approx 8Km from the village of Sella) and initially walking up a forestry track to the Paso de los Contadores (the Counters Pass - used by shepheards in years gone by to count their flocks as they passed through what was then a narrow gap) where, on your left the massive lump of rock called Peņa Roc towers above you. We now leave the track, cross some rough ground and begin our scramble to the summit - a head for heights is a pre-requisite as the ascent is very exposed in places. Once on top, a well earned rest gives you the opportunity to take in the breathtaking 360° views. We are now on the Eastern end of the Sierra Aitana, looking down to our right into the Guadalest valley as we begin the optional ridge walk (a lower path offers an alternative route). We then leave the ridge to join the path for one final ascent before turning left and descending a steep but inviting path which leads us back to our starting point in the Val d'Arc valley.
